How to Get Shelby County Court Records
Indiana MyCase is the free public view of nonconfidential Odyssey case data. Search by cause number or name. Pick the Shelby court if you know it. Then open the Chronological Case Summary, or CCS. Public document links vary by case type and age. The Tyler Indiana E-Filing System serves filing and authenticated work, not public record reading.
No image on the entry? Go to the Shelby County Clerk. The published request route is fax at 317-392-6339 or email at clerkfax@co.shelby.in.us. The county posts no mail or drop-box channel for record requests. For in-person access, go to Room 111, 407 S. Harrison Street, Shelbyville. A courthouse public computer is available too. Records visible there are not automatically printed under the request instructions. Questions may go to 317-392-6320. A formal access issue can use Indiana APRA and court-record procedures. The Clerk remains the official custodian.

- Choose an online image, plain copy, certified copy, transcript, or exhibit request.
- Send an absent-file request by the published fax or email route, or visit Room 111.
- Confirm access and payment before expecting release.
Three Shelby County Court Record Layers
Think of a Shelby County court record in three layers. The CCS is the dated index, a running list of what happened in a case. Filed documents sit underneath it. These are the complaint, a motion, an exhibit, a signed order, or the judgment itself. A certified copy is different again. It is a page from the official file, attested by the Shelby County Clerk. Access to one layer does not unlock the others.
Chronological Case Summary: The public sequence of filings, settings, rulings, and disposition events.
Filed document: The paper or image associated with an event, when public and available.
Certified copy: A Clerk-certified official page, not merely a downloaded image.
Types of Shelby County Court Records
One unified clerk serves all the Shelby County trial courts. The Shelby County Clerk keeps the docket for Shelby Circuit Court, Shelby Superior Court 1, Shelby Superior Court 2, and magistrate matters filed within those systems. Judgments, orders, decrees, pleadings, motions, evidence, rulings, summonses, and subpoenas all fall within that duty list. The county documents page adds small-claims materials, proceeding supplementals, protective orders, marriage records, and divorce decrees.
Transcripts and courtroom recordings move on a separate track. Court reporters hold those mechanical or electronic records under the applicable rules. Exhibits can carry retention periods of their own. Shelby local rules set special handling for civil non-paper exhibits and small-claims exhibits. For an old recording or exhibit, contact the court tied to the cause number. Room 111 should not be assumed to still hold it.
Shelby County Court Records Request Rhythm
The Clerk's record-request instructions run on a fixed weekly clock. Request files by Tuesday noon and review begins Thursday noon. That rhythm matters most when a file must be pulled from storage. Anything already visible in MyCase needs no pull at all. Treat the schedule as a review window. It is not a promise that every file appears at once.

When the public computer does not show a record, the fallback is a planned file request. Payment comes due before receipt, and records on the public computer get no automatic printing.
What a Shelby County Court Record Contains
A full Shelby County court record can hold a lot at once. You might find the CCS alongside party and attorney data. Initiating papers, service returns, motions, exhibits, orders, hearing entries, judgments, and financial events can appear too. Indiana Trial Rule 77 calls the CCS a sequential record of judicial events. The case number tells you the county and court. One example of the format is 73D02-2501-CM-000123. It is illustrative only and not a real case.
| Case identity | Cause number, caption, court, case type, status, and filing date. |
|---|---|
| People and counsel | Public party roles and attorneys of record. |
| CCS events | Dated filings, service, settings, rulings, orders, and disposition. |
| Document images | Public pleadings or orders when online access is supplied. |
| Official copy | The page released and certified by the Shelby County Clerk. |
MyCase Images in Shelby County Court Records
MyCase puts some documents in front of you at no charge. Nonconfidential civil filings often appear. Public criminal final orders or judgments show up too. Coverage is not uniform, though. Anonymous public access is not the same as attorney or party access. An eligible party can use the official "Is this your case?" process and an access code once identity is verified. And here is a key point: a missing document icon does not prove that no filing exists.
When the CCS names an event but shows no image, write down the event date. Note the description too, before you contact the Clerk. That gives staff a precise target to work from. Sealed, confidential, juvenile, expunged, or otherwise excluded material stays restricted no matter how you ask. Neither party access nor a counter request overrides that. The court controls access under the governing rules.
Certified Shelby County Court Records and Fees
The Clerk charges a per-page price for copies. That price applies to both ordinary and certified copies of a Shelby County court record. No separate published fee covers a file search, online image, exemplification, transcript, or general mailing. Confirm those amounts rather than guess. At the records counter, payment comes before release. Cash, business check, or money order works; credit cards do not. The Shelby County documents page publishes the two copy rates.

The notice draws a line between a routine page and a certified page. So tell staff which copy type you need before they calculate the total.
| Item | Published fee | Local note |
|---|---|---|
| Plain copy | $1 per page | Published effective July 1, 2021. |
| Certified copy | $4 per page | Requested through the Shelby County Clerk. |
| Separate search or online fee | Not published | Ask the Clerk; do not assume a charge. |
| Transcript or exemplification | Not published | Confirm with the responsible court or reporter. |
Clerk, Reporter, and Shelby County Exhibits
Which office you ask depends on what you need. The Shelby County Clerk holds the filed case record. The Clerk can certify copies of any page inside it. Want a transcript instead? That is a question for the court reporter, who handles recordings and transcripts. Exhibits are different again, since the court and its local evidence rules control them, along with how long physical items are kept. Knowing these lines saves you time. You avoid sending a docket request to an office that cannot help.
| Material | First contact | Why |
|---|---|---|
| CCS, pleading, order, judgment | Shelby County Clerk | The unified Clerk keeps the court file. |
| Transcript or recording | Assigned court or reporter | Reporter records are a separate channel. |
| Physical or non-paper exhibit | Assigned court | Retention depends on case type and elapsed time. |
Local rules set their own clock for evidence. After a decision, civil non-paper evidence gets special handling, and certain non-scannable small-claims exhibits must be dealt with within 45 days after judgment. Call with the cause number handy so the right court can check what it still holds.
Public Access to Shelby County Court Records
Access to Shelby County court records starts from a simple premise. The file is open unless something closes it. Indiana Records Rule 4 builds that general presumption. It then carves out whatever a rule, statute, or order excludes. Records Rule 5 handles confidential categories and the redaction of sensitive identifiers. Want back in? Records Rule 9 lays out the process for asking a court to release excluded information.
Indiana APRA, IC 5-14-3-3, adds its own recognition of inspection and copying rights. Statutory exceptions and judiciary rules still apply. The general public-access rule spells out that starting point for Shelby County court records.

The rule draws one clear line. Public access is the default, yet a specific exclusion can still govern a whole case or a single paper inside it.
Missing is not necessarily nonexistent: Sealed, juvenile, protection-order, expunged, or non-digitized material may not appear in an ordinary MyCase result.
Remote Shelby County Court Records and Official Copies
Indiana Administrative Rule 9 covers a lot of ground. It governs remote access, calendars, dockets, fees, and court-record policy. That framework explains a gap people often miss. The online CCS is convenient, but it is not a certified official record. MyCase says so itself. It warns that online information can have omissions or lag behind, and that the official record lives with the court maintaining the file.
The current Administrative Rule 9 text supplies the statewide framework behind Shelby County electronic access.

Statewide rules and the local Clerk process fit together. Use remote access for discovery, then ask the office holding the file for the official page when certification matters.
